New Study Shows 19% of Women in the US Now Using Pinterest

While I’ve noticed that there are quite a few men using Pinterest from the UK, I haven’t seen too many other fellow American men joining up. At least not in the numbers that women have. Strange, considering men as a whole are considered a more visual group among the sexes. However, there’s now some numerical data to back up my assertion that women are flocking to Pinterest to post pictures of favorite recipes, dresses and Johnny Depp. Even my “Men of Pinterest, Unite!” pinboard has been feeling a little lonely lately.

A Pew Internet & American Life Project report confirms Pinterest’s reputation in the US. According to a survey of more than 1,000 adults in America, nearly 20% of women using the Internet are now on Pinterest, compared to just 5% of men. All told, 12% of American Internet users are on the image-based social network, which has surged in popularity in the past year.

Pinterest Reveals Some Surprises On and Off-Site

Some Surprises from Pinterest

Several “Pinteresting” things to report today.

Firstly, you may have noticed new categories being added to Pinterest. Tattoos, technology, kids, posters, home decor and cars being among them. It seems that so many people were grouping these things together themselves, that Pinterest decided to make it easier to find them and offer a category for each. I knew I was seeing a lot of tattoos on there, but I’m a bit shocked that it warranted its own category. And the new categories seem (very slightly) slanted towards men’s interests, in fact. I wonder if that’s an attempt at getting more men on Pinterest, or an actual need that is being met? Who knows?

Along those same lines, it seems although WAY more women hang out on Pinterest, more men buy the things they come across. Twenty percent more, in fact. That should change the way marketers have been approaching Pinterest and what they pin on there, knowing that the men are the ones going out and spending the money.
